We longed to die like Saddam
By Ian Kirby
News of the World, Sunday January 7th, 2007

SADDAM Hussein's two evil henchmen awaiting the noose have made a pathetic last-ditch bid to be seen as martyrs.

In an exclusive interview obtained by the News of the World Saddam's half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and his close pal, ex-judge Awad Hamed al-bandar, said they wanted to die like the tyrant they worshipped — after watching his hanging on TV.

They gave their final wishes in a meeting with Saddam's lawyer Issam Gazawi at the Baghdad high security compound where they are being held.

Both said they would refuse to wear a hood like their evil hero. Bandar bleated: "We will never forget how he went with a smile.

"I wanted to die with HIM that night. It would have been an honour."

Ibrahim claimed they should have been hanged on the same day as Saddam —but their deaths were postponed because of the furore over his execution.

He said: "That night while we were waiting, counting the minutes, I was executed so many times. Another time? Well at least this time we will not wake up."

In their interview with Gazawi — obtained by American TV interviewer Daphne Barak — the pair also claimed they had been made to watch Saddam's death on TV.

Ibrahim said: "We had not watched television before but suddenly we were allowed to watch. We saw the execution until they put the rope around his neck."

Referring to the mobile video showing Saddam's death, Ibrahim said: "We know about the video and how people danced and kicked his body. It is a shame such a thing can happen."

The two are expected to be handed over to the Iraqi administration before their execution at Camp Cropper in central Baghdad.
