Political and financial turmoil in Pakistan. And overwhelming demand for President Musharraf to take off his uniform. When Daphne confronted him - during the only interview he granted with his wife at home - regarding the uniform: Musharraf conffesed that he had promised to take it off. "Daphne, I said I would, but..." Bhutto will not conclude any deal with Musharraf unless this matter is resolved. Meanwhile - Bhutto's successor and his brother - Nawaz and Shahwaz Sharif - tried to return to their homeland. Nawaz was deported to Saudi Arabia while his brother cancelled his trip under his request (Summer 2007).
Benazir Bhutto saying that
Musharraf just did a Marshall law!
President Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency in Pakistan, suspending the constitution, replacing the chief justice before a crucial supreme court ruling on his future as President.... He is also cutting communications in the capital.
Daphne conducted the only interview with Musharraf and his wife at home. She has also conducted the only interview with Benazir Bhutto and her husband Asif at one of their temporary homes.
Remembering Benazir
Benazir's only sister Sanam is giving her first interview ever to Daphne. The emotional TV interview includes family photos never seen before. Sanam and Daphne are hosting a tribute for Benazir next month. Benazir's husband Asif is organizing a tribute, the same time in Pakistan. Asif descirbed Daphne in an exclusive interview how his children watched television, while the tragedy happened... He is calling for an independent international investigation about his wife's murder.
Qatif girl
After the revolution that Muhtar May - Pakistani rape victim who dared challenging the system - the Qatif girl is doing the same in Saudi Arabia. Daphne has interviewed Muhtar May, and was taken by her strengths and by her sense of right and wrong. That's why she conditioned her interview President Musharraf, who had made a sarcastic remark about this brave woman... Daphne demanded that his interview would be the first one with his wife, and it would include issues like women's basic rights. And - so it was (Below Mrs. and Mr. Musharraf, hosting Daphne at home).
Daphne's intimate sit-down with Imran Khan
at his home in Islamabad Pakistan
Very personel TV interview. Imran talks with Daphne about: his days in jail, his current relationship with his ex-wife Jemima who fought for his release, what love is, divorce, singlehood, his children... Elisabeth Hurley, Princess Diana, Hasnat Khan, conspiracy theory invented by Dodi's father (now ridiculed by the inquest) AND ... Yes, Pervez Musharraf!

Musharraf to Daphne (in their famous 2005 TV sit-down in):
I took this country by bloodless coup…
DB: What do you mean a ‘bloodless coup’? Either it is a coup or it is not a coup…
Sharif to Daphne (in their TV sit-down, 2007:
In 1996, when Benazir Bhutto’s government had been sent home…
DB: I don’t understand… Who sent them home???
Pakistani terminologies.
Go figure…
Imran Khan...
Cricket legend Imran Khan, who has become a politician in his homeland, started a hunger strike in jail. He was arrested early November 2007. His three sisters have been arrested as well, while demonstrating for his release! They were let go soon after.
Daphne has been a friend of Imran for years. She has hosted his family's members at her New York home. She has supported his cancer foundation in Lahore, and made sure that his message would go worldwide when it was restricted in-house... Daphne and Jemima Goldsmith (Imran's ex-wife) are also friendly and involved in many mutual causes.

IN THE NEWS Pakistan
The new government of Pakistan (a coalition of the two main parties PPP & PML plus smaller parties) has began its journey, a bumby one... Riots in La Hore, riots in Karachi... the coalition led by Asif Ali Zardari (Benazir Bhutto's widower) and Nawaz Sahrif has to deliver the extreemly high expectations of the Pakistani people. Unrealistic expectations, but... defeated president Pervez Musharraf who is visiting China right now, is having the time of his life!
The Scotland Yard report concludes that Benazir Bhutto died as a result of bomb blast, not by a shot gun.
Above photos: Bilawal Bhutto, Daphne and Sanam Bhutto, hiding between the two of them driving around Oxford. Bilawal, majoring history, and he is staying away from any political development although he is
the co-chairman of the PPP party in Pakistan.

Surprise, Surprise! Power sharing coalition is falling out...
Benazir Bhutto and Daphne met first time in 1995 for a TV interview: an exceptionally candid and personal interview. Benazir was the prime minister of Pakistan by then. But Daphne warmed up to her and became a close friend years later, when Benazir was in exile and her husband was in jail.
Daphne interviewed Benazir twice more, and conducted an interview with her and her husband Asif, which launched her decision to come back to Pakistan in the eyes of the West in 2006.
Daphne was famously against Benazir's decision to go back to Pakistan, because it was so risky.
Sadly, Daphne was one of the hosts of the tribute to Benazir in London, 40 days after she was killed.
Daphne's involvement with the probe to Benazir's assassination began in February 2009 soon after UN established the commission under Chilean ambassador.

Asif Ali Zardari - Pakistan's Next President?
The latest reason for the downfall of the ruling coalition in Pakistan is Asif Ali Zardari's "availability" to replace Pervez Musharraf. Some reports attached it to the Swiss case regarding laundering money (against Zardari and the late Benazir Bhutto). Others - attributed to many rumours floating all over Pakistan since Zardari took over the place of his assassinated wife.
Daphne who conisdered Benazir as her elder sister, and permitted Asif an exceptional close access, thinks that Asif should become the next president of Pakistan!
Responding to many emails, inquiring about Daphne helping Asif, "to clean his image", her view is that this development is destined for Pakistan's future even if - for a short term!!!
Longer term would be determined by the people of Pakistan... But this step
has to take place first.

Chaos in Pakistan
On Sunday, 15 March 2009 - while people led by Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif, and Imran Khan were marching in the streets -, Daphne joined concerned policy makers in US and Europe, for the future of the people of Pakistan. While President Asif Ali Zardari was under increasing pressure to restore the judges and prevent possible bloodshed, Sanam Bhutto made very bitter remarks to Daphne regarding her feelings toward her brother-in-law and the situation the country is in. Although Sanam has shared with Daphne such feelings before. Sometimes - even in the presence of Daphne's friends. But the tone and the bitterness this time were alerting.
Concessions of the president: Sharia
IMF loans 7.5 billion dollars to Pakistan
A temporary relief for the desperate economy of Pakistan. IMF has approved very needed loan to Pakistan (November 2008). President Asif Ali Zardari who had stressed that his country needed urgent help, otherwise... Well, he received cash flow from IMF but with very specific conditions.
